The Pleasure Report. Week 22. The easy ideas edition.

Week 22 in the year of pleasure.

The Pleasure

Fifty seven points this week. Forty one last week.

A 57:1 pleasure to pain ratio

A selection of the pleasure

Ideas coming to me

I have a list of life things I’m exploring and would like to make decisions about soon.

They’re potentially destabilising things, like

– do we still want to live here now that we don’t need to be here for school and if not here then where do we want to live?

and

– how do I reconfigure things so I can spend more time on research?

Ideas have been coming to me. Ideas coming easily without my having to do very much at all.

Ideas that make me slap my forehead at the simplicity and do-ableness of them.

Ideas for back up options that give me a feeling of security while I carry on exploring options.

Proper time off

Do you just keep going?

Even when you’re sitting still, maybe looking to the world like you’re relaxing, but your mind is still on duty, whirring away, addressing this or that.

I can be prone to that, especially when I have big ponderings going on.

This week, more than once, I made it into proper time off mode. It was good.

I decided it was time to stop. And I stopped.

One time I didn’t carry on searching, in what could be an indefinite search, I said stop now, at 7pm, and relax. And then sat in the evening sunshine with my eyes closed and let the pace of everything slow right down.

Another time I didn’t carry on making improvements to what was already fine, but not perfect. I said that’s enough, stopped at 9pm and we watched a film, Julie and Julia, and a lovely film it was too.

A quote I like a lot

“All animals, except man, know that the principle business of life is to enjoy it.”

Samuel Butler

(I got this via Waverly Fitzgerald’s newsletter. That’s a link to her site where you can sign up for her newsletter if you’d like to hear about all things to do with living with the seasons).

The Pain

It seems I’m still not a lover of spontaneity

I had a phone call booked and it was cancelled with half an hour’s notice.

I anticipated mid life bringing me a greater ability to be happily flexible. To be able to turn things like that around.

To see it less as ‘I’ve been cancelled’ and more as ‘I have an unexpected hour to do with as I please’.

No. Not happening.

There was puffing out of air and grimacing and time spent gruffly looking at whether it could be re-organised as requested. I’d have needed to move things around to re-organise it and I wasn’t up for that.

I do the organising of things but I do. not. love. it.

I want to avoid (emergencies excepted) duplicating and re-organising that which has already been organised at all costs.

Probably still something to work on in there. More graciousness would be delightful. Sigh.

The pain I did something about

With my irrational and strong dislike of re-organising acknowledged and allowed, knowing it would take re-organising to re-book it, I didn’t attempt to summon reluctant, uncomfortable energy to re-organise.

I just cancelled.

A little better. Slightly more gracious.

And now for something completely different
